Portraits

Hi! I have been an artist all of my life and have been doing portraits of both people and animals for about the past 30 years. I love to do portraits, and I find it challenging and fun. I received my formal art training at the San Francisco Art Institute, and have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I also have an Associates degree in Graphic Design from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.
Black and white portraits are available in pencil, and color portraits are available in watercolor. I work primarily from photographs and slides. If you have a favorite photograph that you would like to be used, please make sure there is adequate detail and good lighting. Sometimes providing several different photographs of the subject is helpful.
If there is not an existing photograph that is preferred, I am happy to take photographs of the subject for the cost of the film and developing. Simple backgrounds are included in the portrait price. Sometimes, no background is needed. If a very detailed background is desired, there may be an additional charge, negotiated before the initial drawing is started.

I especially like to do portraits of horses! I love capturing the beauty and personality of them in a work of art. Usually I prefer to take slides of horses for their portraits because I can see very fine details much easier in a slide than in a photo. I can still do a horse portrait from a photo but the level of detail is sometimes less.

Sometimes I like to draw a portrait from life. The one to the right was done with the subject sitting nearby. I like to use charcoal paper when drawing from life, and white highlights can then be added to the toned paper.

I also like to do house portraits! I have found that early evening light works well for these portraits. Then there is still some lingering daylight, and the lights of the house can also be painted.
